    February 6, 2018, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Goldsboro Library

Attorney Lisa Henderson about her research into two communities of free people of color in Eureka and in Dudley during the years 1790-1865. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Harvard Law School, Lisa wrote her master’s thesis on the “Involuntary Apprenticeship of Free Children of Color in Wayne County 1830-1860” for Columbia University. Free people of color filled an important niche in the social structure of the antebellum South, working as farmers, artisans, and small retail merchants. On the eve of the Civil War, Wayne County had 737 free people of color including the surnames Artis, Reid, Seaberry, Hagans, Simmons, Wynn, and Greenfield. This program is free. No registration is necessary to attend. For more information, contact the local history room at 919-735-1824, ext. 5117 or the Goldsboro reference desk or call us at 919-735-1824, ext. 3.
