The people of Goldsboro
have every reason to be especially proud of the character and diversity of
their many great business houses and one
of the truly representative enterprises, one which has contributed largely to
the City’s commercial rating is that of Mr. R. E. Pipkin, who has been
operating a large wholesale business for more than thirty years. Mr. Pipkin is one of the cleaverest [sic] merchants of the City
and enjoys a high standing in commercial circles, and aside from his own
interests has at heart the general welfare of the community. His house is one of the most popular
wholesale concerns of Goldsboro,
and the business is on a solid and substantial basis.

M. DAVIS GROCERY COMPANY. – Wholesale and Retail Grocers. - Of this establishment it may be said that it
constitutes one of the most attractive business features of Goldsboro, and its reputation as a great
source of supply for strictly pure food products is greatly appreciated by the
high class trade of this city and vicinity.
For variety, quality and extent the stock carried is not excelled in the
State. They handle the choicest staple
and fancy groceries, teas and coffees, canned and bottled goods, table
delicacies and everything usually found in a strictly first class store of this
character. The business has been
established for the past year and is growing rapidly. Mr. E. M. Davis is the Managing Proprietor,
and is classed among the cleverest business men of Goldsboro.
This is a good store through and through, from front to rear, side to
side, top to bottom, and in the center.
The management invites people to come in at any time they please,
whether they wish to buy anything or not, stay as long as they like, and look
around as much as they like., for Mr. Davis realizes that the more people know
about this store the better they are satisfied that this is the “only place.”
T.
R. VICK. – This Gentleman is a dealer in fresh and salt water fish, oysters and
game in season. Mr. Vick does both a
wholesale and retail trade and has been operating the business since March,
1914. Previous to this time for some
four years he was Manager for the well known firm of R. W. Taylor and Son. Mr. Vick has a large trade among the leading
families of Goldsboro. He is thoroughly familiar with every detail
of the fish and oyster business and keeps a strictly first class and sanitary
market.
HICKS
& HAWLEY, Incorporated. – Wholesale and Retail Druggists. - This
is a growing and prosperous enterprise, the business having been established
for the past three years. Its location
is on North John Street,
next to the Postoffice. Their store is
one of the handsomest in Goldsboro
and is a distinct credit to the city.
The equipment of the store is in strict accordance to the modern
requirements of this important and intricate profession. The proprietors are Messrs. J. E. F. Hicks,
and John H. Hawley, both of whom have had a number of years of actual
practice. They conduct their business
according to the highest ethics, accurately compound prescriptions, and carry a
magnificent stock of pure drugs and chemicals, sick room requisites, hospital
supplies, etc., in fact everything usually found in strictly first class drug
stores. At the soda fountain all the
popular drinks of the season are served.
GOLDSBORO SHOE COMPANY – Shoes
Exclusively, 115 East Walnut
Street. - Nothing
is more beautiful than a shoe that fits, and nothing gives greater satisfaction
than footwear purchased of a thoroughly reliable dealer, and the firm whose
name heads this sketch guarantees every pair of shoes as represented. The business of the Goldsboro Shoe Company
has been established for more than ten years, and too much cannot be said of
this house, its true worth and merits are known, not alone to the people of the
entire county, and the magnificent business operated by the company bespeaks
for itself. They handle such famous
makes as Dorathy Dodd for ladies, and Nettleton, Howard and Foster &
Walk-Over for men. Experienced Shoeists
are employed to wait upon the trade. The
head of this concern is Mr. James M. Allen, and in points of experience in the
business has few equals and no superior.
As a citizen it has been his constant endeavor to push Goldsboro to the front. Merit always wins and such men deserve to
succeed. Mr. Allen is also President of
the Peoples Bank of Goldsboro.
